Goldenrods as a group are the top keystone species of herbaceous plants in Washtenaw County (Tallamy, 2020), as they support 136 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars that provide spring food for birds feeding their young. Insectivores, reptiles and amphibians, and other insects also eat caterpillars, which are vital to a helthy food web. Riddell's has graceful arched, narrow leaves that turn carmine in the fall; eye-catching when paired with blue or purple asters.
